Me and her outside (2006)

I found myself outside a building like a leisure centre at night, the double doors in the entrance were open and there was an extremely bright light inside. It looked like the part of Rushcliffe school to the left of the leisure centre. I looked around, and everywhere else was deserted, so I walked in. I could gradually make out shapes as I walked along the corridor, it was a swimming pool, there were people bustling about, nobody was laughing or shouting, though. The corridor opened out in to the swimming pool hall, and there was a reception desk immediately on the right. The receptionist was talking to someone else, so I waited to talk to him. He finished talking to them, and then handed me a key and pointed to a lift. I got in the lift, went upstairs, and was in a hotel. The corridors were narrow and there was the sound of a television game show somewhere in the distance. I walked along the corridors looking for my room, then I saw a toilet at the end of the corridor and realised I needed to go. As I reached the entrance to the toilets I heard the television blaring to my right, and looked down a corridor to see a room full of people eating. There was a little television on a shelf on the wall, and everyone was eating thin soup, there was roll next to their bowls. There was no expression on anyone’s face, nobody was talking, they were just eating their soup spoon by spoon. One of the people was staring at me. I had a memory of having eaten somewhere else before – a large hall? – and thought Oh, that’s where I’ll be eating from now on, then.

I walked straight ahead in to the toilets. There was no door on the toilets so you could see straight in. There were a few stalls at the left, urinals straight ahead, and a sink with a mirror to the right, everything was crammed in to a relatively small room. I was carrying a big bundle of something on my back, a rucksack maybe. I walked ahead to the urinals and around to the ones at the back (there was a 4ft wooden wall with urinals either side) but there wasn’t enough room – there was only 6 inches between the urinals and the wall. I walked back to the stalls and sat down. There were no doors on the stalls. I finished up and washed my hands in front of the mirror, but I didn’t look in to it.

I walked back down the corridors to find my room. The receptionist, or someone very like him – thin with black greasy hair – was at a reception up there, just an opening in the wall surrounded by people waiting. He said something to me about a frog. I found my room and closed the door and sat on the bed. The room was like a prison cell, just a small room big enough for a single squeaky bed with a thin mattress. My head started shaking and I started turning in to a frog. I knew I was about to turn in to a frog, but I didn’t know how I was going to end up looking – I thought to myself Oh, I’m turning in to a frog aren’t I. I was watching myself from across the room sat on the bed with my head shaking and gradually becoming a green blur. It stopped suddenly, and my head was smooth and green and featureless except for two black beady eyes and a lipless mouth.

I wanted to go home and see my wife, and it was around this point that I realised I was dead, and in the afterlife.

Somehow I managed to get out and visit her for a short while – she was living in a terraced house putting out the washing while two children played in the garden. I saw her for a short while, I’m not sure if she could see me – I was still a frog man – and then I had to go back. I realised that the only way I was going to be able to see her any more was to be a frog.

David Pantling

David currently produces a striking range of tableware and large asymmetrical vessels. inspiration for his designs is drawn from the world of Art, themes of communication and his interst in mathematics.

many designs have a deeper meaning that is not immeadiately obvious such as his exploration into language including designs based on sign laguage and braille.

David is intrigued by patterns in mathematics and was inspired to use a palette of colours to explore irrational numbers resulting in vivid linear designs.

he is passionate about sports and particlarly swimming. In 2005 David swam the English channel celebrated through his smimmers tableware.

Peter Ellis

“I am more interested in what I don’t know than what I do and am particularly intrigued in the often transgressive overlap
between various disciplines where demarcation and contention make new challenges. I work with everyday stuff excavating ironic and formal
relationships between the functions of objects, their histories and metaphoric shadows.”

Peter Ellis trained in Manchester, wolverhampton and Chelsea Fine Art Departments. He now lives and works in Nottingham and is Associate
Senior Lecturer in Fine Art at Leeds Metropolitan University. Peter completed residencies in Stuttgart,1981, and Lugansk, Ukraine, 1990 and was Junior

lecturer Fellow at Cardiff 1974-75, and Miles mehan Fellow at Darlington, 1991. he has a long track record of exhibitions and awards.

Kaption 1, Illustrator/painter. Kaption 1 is currently part of a growing trend of live illustration or live art battles that are being hosted in the darkest corners of each city, sometimes you might stumble across one in the basement of a bar in the East end of London or even in a deserted meat factory in Malmo Sweden… ‘Live art’ or ‘performance art’ is where an artist creates a piece of art in front of audience. This experience gives the viewers some insight into the mind of an artist at work, which is very exciting and thought provoking.”

My work is predominantly concerned with the depiction of people in situations that reflect everyday life.I attempt to draw attention to situations that at first appear routine but within this I hope to highlight a variety of human situations, experiences and emotions. Recent themes have focused on Dementia, African Emigration and Airport departure lounges. My current project focuses on shoppers on a busy Nottingham street.

I work with Acrylic paint. I enjoy working fast and I’m striving to develop a more painterly style avoiding the ‘tightness’ that I sometimes succumb to.

My aim is to is to encourage observers to look beyond the obvious. To look closely at my paintings and to share something of what I see.

Sarah Hemstock

Sarah Hemstock was born in the Nottinghamshire mining Town of Kirkby-in-Ashfield. Her early education centered on the sciences, gaining an honours degree and PhD in Biology from Kings College London. It was during this time that Sarah met sculptor Brian Wiltshire, a chance encounter which further encouraged her interest in wood carving and sculpture, an effortless progression from studying nature to working with natural materials. A major influence in Sarah’s work has been her ongoing development work, with NGO’s in India, Peru, Fiji, Samoa, Tuvalu, Kiribati, Vanuatu and Sub-Saharan Africa. Her NGO work has always dealt with communities, promoting sustainable development and has involved projects as diverse as rehabilitating Inca agricultural systems – terracing and irrigation to making diesel from coconut oil in the South Pacific. Sustainable development work intrinsically involves working with natural renewable resources such as wood and other biomass and forms a basis for her interest in natural sculptural materials and forms.

Lightwaves (2006)

Raphael Daden

Raphael Daden is a Nottingham/UK based sculptor working mainly with light. His first commission was a series of large illuminated ‘Cones’ on West Street, Brighton, using translucent polyester resin, light and steel. Subsequent commissions have included: Swinegate Under Bridge Lighting Project (Leeds City Centre), commissioned by Public Arts Wakefield; ‘A Million Years Under The Sea. Raphael’s work has also been shown at a number of venues as part of his work as the founder of ‘Lightsource’, which ran the touring ‘Spectrum Exhibition of Light’.

His long list of exhibitions includes ‘Landmarks’, at Crescent Arts in Scarborough; ‘Sea’ at Wolverhampton Art Gallery; ‘Art from the Studio’ at Nottingham Castle Museum and Art Gallery; and ‘Drawing With Light’ at Shire Hall Gallery, Stafford. After graduating from Loughborough College of Art and Design in 1997.

Raphael began combining different materials with light. He started working in resins while casting parts of the landscape for his solo exhibition, ‘Landmarks,’ based on the geological make up of the earth and natural patterns of layered strata formed over time. Using resin and light to bring the landscape into the gallery space, Raphael created abstract sculptural forms, which reflected the essence of the natural environment.
